About the Role

Lead the evaluation, assessment, and underwriting for the NSW State Governments construction insurance portfolio. This role requires the maintenance and oversight of a sustainable portfolio by assessing project-specific exposures, reviewing contracts, providing insurance guidance and managing States exposure via engagement with reinsurance partners. As part of the Construction Risks Insurance Fund this role plays a key part in supporting Agencies by providing advice, insurance solutions and insights into the construction insurance market for projects here in NSW.

Duties

It’s an exciting time at icare where no two days are the same; as a Senior Underwriter, Construction, you will:

  • Review and Underwrite the States construction risks and provide insights and referral to management in line with the approved delegations.
  • Decide on the coverage terms and conditions for project risks across several lines of construction specific insurance and work as part of the Underwriting team to assess whole of the States construction portfolio.
  • Provide subject matter expert input in the implementation of any changes to underwriting, to enhance Scheme effectiveness and to achieve business and customer objectives.
  • Foster and maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Participate in projects to address specific elements of underwriting.
  • Engage with and foster key external relationships to ensure effective engagement with the icare business model including supporting Agencies.
  • Lead and develop the training to Agency customers of policy developments and changes in underwriting appetite and processes.
  • Proactively participate in developing and implementing premium determination strategies to ensure Scheme viability and consistent application of guidelines and regulations.
  • Assist in developing the implementation of programs that enhance the effectiveness of premium calculation which contributes to the delivery of improved performance.
  • Participate in forums as a subject matter expert to drive knowledge enhancement and improved performance.

 

Skills & Experience

  • Business qualifications, and/or ANZIIFF Certificate in Insurance courses or equivalent knowledge and skills acquired through practical experience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities for effective customer and team interactions.
  • Detailed understanding of the methodologies, composition and variables of premium setting and documenting supporting rationale.
  • An ability to clearly articulate premium calculation methodology and logic.
  • Strong insurance background in construction broking, underwriting, reinsurance or claims management, with a minimum of 5 years’ experience.
  • Demonstrated capability in Construction Insurance
  • An extensive range of experience in the insurance industry with a varied experience across corporate and/or major accounts and/ or portfolio underwriting.
  • Sound technical underwriting knowledge and understanding of the workings of policy wordings.
  • Highly motivated and engaging individual with exceptional stakeholder management skills, in particular working collaboratively with internal stakeholders.
  • Experience across multiple secondary product lines including professional indemnity, marine cargo and construction plant and equipment to complement your Construction expertise.
  • Experience related to data management and/or asset management in a large, complex organisation.
  • Experience working in government department or an appreciation of the workings of government departments.
