  • The senior engineering authority across icare's technology function

This is the most senior hands-on engineering role at icare - setting technical direction across platforms, applications and services, owning the engineering standards, and developing the engineering leaders beneath you. Hands-on, not hands-off.

About the role

You'll be the engineering authority across icare's technology function - the person delivery teams look to for technical direction, design decisions and the standard that good looks like.

You'll set the direction across platforms, applications and services, own the engineering standards and quality bar, and develop a team of tech leads and developers across multiple squads.

It's a deliberately hands-on role: you stay close to the design and the code, act as the senior voice on complex problems, and lead by craft as much as by title - all in a complex, regulated environment where scalability, resilience and security genuinely matter.

The scope

  • Senior engineering authority across the entire technology function
  • Up to 10 direct reports - tech leads and developers across multiple platforms
  • Ownership of engineering standards, quality and technical direction
  • Direction of cloud and modern engineering adoption across squads

What you'll do - the engineering

  • Set clear technical direction across platforms, applications and services, aligned to enterprise architecture and engineering strategy
  • Act as the senior technical authority on complex problem-solving and design decisions
  • Review and guide solution design for scalability, resilience, security and maintainability
  • Own engineering standards, secure coding principles and quality controls, and drive consistent adoption across squads
  • Lift code quality, testing, automation and DevSecOps maturity, and promote reuse and reduction of technical debt
  • Direct the adoption of cloud platforms and modern engineering practice, and enable teams to use AI tools and automation to improve productivity and quality

What you'll do - the leadership

  • Lead, mentor and coach a team of tech leads and developers across multiple platforms
  • Own day-to-day people management - performance, goal setting, development and succession planning
  • Build a high-performing engineering culture grounded in ownership, craftsmanship and accountability
  • Partner with Engineering Managers, Product Owners and Delivery Leads to enable efficient, predictable delivery
  • Collaborate with Architecture, Platform and Delivery stakeholders, and translate complex technical concepts into clear guidance for executive and non-technical audiences

What you'll bring

  • 10+ years of technical expertise across modern application development, platforms and engineering practices (APIs, microservices, cloud-native architectures)
  • Deep knowledge of engineering standards, secure development principles and solution design review for scalability, resilience and maintainability
  • Strong working knowledge of cloud platforms (Azure, AWS) and DevSecOps practice
  • Excellent leadership, coaching and mentoring skills, with real people-management experience across performance, development and succession
  • A track record influencing technical decisions, guiding teams through complex challenges and building a high-performing engineering culture
  • Strong stakeholder skills to translate technical concepts into business outcomes, and a tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Engineering, IT or related discipline (or equivalent experience)

Highly Regarded: cloud certifications (Azure Solutions Architect, AWS Certified); knowledge of AI-assisted development and engineering productivity tools; platform engineering and reusable services models; enterprise architecture frameworks and integration patterns; experience with platform-based operating models (core vs enabling platforms); and a background in highly regulated environments.

What's in it for you

  • A corporate wellbeing program with subsidised gym membership, free flu vaccinations and health checks
  • An extra day's leave through icare day
  • Learning and development aligned to icare's Core Capabilities
  • Recognition through Our People Awards - on-the-spot, quarterly and annual
  • Access to our Employee Assistance Program
